      1. A few people DM'd me, pointing me in the direction of one of SarahZ's latest videos in which she talks about High Guardian Spice. I did see it and I guess I have a thought or two

She definitely gives the show less credit than I do, which is fine. I don't think I wrote my piece with the intention that anyone would change their mind about HGS. I liked it, I justified why, I was pretty even-handed, I talked strengths and weaknesses, and I'm good with that

Some stuff about the vid bugged me a little. For example, she said she thought that there were a lot of plot points which didn't work but could have if they were edited. Which is fair, but a weird thing to say without also mentioning that the show just straight up wasn't edited

She mentions sacrificial trash happens to anything with a progressive lead but doesn't stick if the show turns out good. She compares She Ra to HGS and says because She Ra was actually good the attacks lost traction. I don't particularly like the framing?

Part of it is because I just genuinely do not believe HGS is a bad show. I haven't seen She Ra or anything. But mainly, I don't think sacrificial trash has anything to do with the show being "good". It has everything to do with institutional support and working conditions

High Guardian Spice was made for CR Studios by an ununionized staff. CR used HGS to promote their foray into original content, and then dropped them like a sack of roadkill the second the crew was being harassed by weirdos online.

The crew was abandoned to the dogs with no time, no protection, and no budget, forced to finish the show on a 2019 release schedule that Crunchyroll HAD to have already known was no longer even remotely in play

When She Ra was being attacked, Dreamworks Animations (which has unionized positions btw) did the bare minimum of actually supporting the show through release, of not rushing anything, of keeping things funded, etc.

The reason why sacrificial trash stuck to HGS is because CR let it. They decided HGS was no longer useful to them, refused to communicate with the crew, refused to defend their workers from death threats and transphobic abuse, and dumped the show on their site when they felt it

Onyx Equinox is a CR original series with a diverse cast that had a much, much better reception than HGS. You may be surprised to learn it was made by most of the same people. The one difference? They unionized! The workers decided they wouldn't put up with CR's behavior

Sacrificial trash has everything to do with corporate malpractice, working conditions, and labor rights in the animation industry. It's just weird to talk about HGS as if it wasn't completely screwed over from the start. In fact, I am continually amazed by how much works

idk or maybe I'm just salty that this is another case of me doing something, and then someone bigger doing the same thing and me getting none of the credit. whatever it's fine. the vid was fine. bluh
