While it's definitely true (and good) that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is going worse than they expected, the media is transparently exaggerating how badly Russia is doing and I'm concerned about the long-term consequences
-
For example, the media will always report Ukrainian estimates for Russian troop losses, but Ukraine doesn't report its own troop losses and the media will of course not report Russian numbers for Ukrainian troop losses
-
So it creates the illusion of massive human and equipment loss on the Russian side with no comparable losses on the Ukrainian side, which cannot possibly be true given how eagerly the media will turn around and report Ukrainian civilian losses
-
We'll see a video of Ukrainians driving around in a Russian tank or hear about some old lady disabling a drone by throwing stuff at it and it sounds very promising but at the end of every day the territory that Russia controls does not get smaller. It gets bigger, just slowly
-
It kind of feels like the message is, *if* we were to go to war with Russia, it'll definitely be totally easy because of how weak the Russians are providing to be. Now, besides the fact that we were literally just run out of Afghanistan by the Taliban a few months ago...
-
...I feel like a military capable of creating 3 million refugees and 6.5 million internally displaced people in a matter of weeks is not necessarily one I would try and downplay. A military armed with nuclear weapons and positioned to use them is certainly not nothing.
-
I guess people don't want to make Russia look good or repeat Kremlin propaganda which is understandable but then they start wanting to make decisions based on this massaged narrative as well.

I see Zelenskyy saying if negotiations fail (they will at least at first) then it's World War III. And rather than trying to push for de-escalation, liberals are basically going "fuck yeah let's do this!! we'll totally kick Russian ass!!" It's disturbing tbh
