Instead of recovering from empire day celebrations why not check out this Spring 2021 review thread? Handy dandy scaling system, as per yuge, detailed below. Shows that are * get my "seal of approval" (great storytelling + socialist themes) docs.google.com/document/d/1hsaEOm4qLu25Tikv-_7uZuoYgv0VKN-vp0mvxLaB3Xw/

When I went into this special, I wanted two things: a special that looks at least somewhat okay and a special that ends the plot of the main series. The first came true but the second didn’t.
-
Seemingly having abandoned any attempts to finish the story logically or thematically, the WEP special seems to aim to pack as many of the creator's unimplemented ideas into a 22 minute timeframe as possible. None of these ideas are explained, explored, or otherwise done justice.
-
I disagree with the idea that the special ruins everything good about WEP. I think charitable readings of the text can leave the story’s themes intact. But, broadly speaking, 13th egg simply refuses to fix the problems eggs 7-12 had, which is almost more sad.

If you told me that A-1 pictures was going to make an anime about a sci-fi fascist empire that tackles real-world issues surrounding oppression, racism, genocide, and war, I’d tell you to “sign me the fuck up”. But then we got 86. Yeah 😕
-
Some people really liked this, some people really hated it. Me? I just… didn’t care. I don’t care about the characters. I don’t care about the story. The anti-fascist politics are too focused around sympathizing with the oppressors to be effective. Aggressively mediocre.
-
It’s a story about a European empire oppressing racial minorities, but there are no Black people. What is your excuse for this? “Uh, um, well, I-” Yeah, exactly. Thought so, bitch
-
I know a lot of people following this anime got really invested every week, going through highs when it was particularly good and lows when it slipped. Honestly to me this was always just a fun robot show. I don’t see it as anything more than that. It was fine.
-
I was skeptical about this at first. It’s got a very unique visual language but the actual show takes a while to pick up. Once it does pick up tho 👀
-
Best I can describe it is: OddTaxi is a psychological crime drama that seems to intimately understand how people work in today’s culture. It weaves together like 5 different stories and a dozen characters into an impressive and satisfying conclusion.
-
I’m always looking for anime I can show people who aren’t familiar with the medium, and I think OddTaxi makes a great addition to this mental list. But personally, an anti-police through line would’ve sent this over the edge. Sadly, we didn’t get that. Still great imo

As a Black person, I support Black people making anime about Black people.
-
Yasuke is weird and interesting. It mixes real history with Japanese and American storytelling tropes to tell a convincing story about fighting against old traditions and bigotries to create a future where people can be whoever they want.
-
But, even if Yasuke wasn’t that, I would still support it because, as a Black person, I support Black people making anime about Black people. And I’m sick of needing another reason to like it. Fuck you.
-
Another show that I was skeptical about, but just barely ended up getting Mo Black Seal of Approval.
-
Shadows House is the story of a noble family that uses the soot produced from coal as a metaphor for the social transformations that took place in the industrial revolution. However, there’s really only one episode that digs into this, and that’s episode 11.
-
Shadows House is I think more concerned with its adorable main character Emilico and how she makes everyone nicer than social commentary. Without this episode, Shadows House would’ve been still enjoyable, but much lower on the list

Moriarty is actually just unironically utopian socialism and I had to write about it this is so cool to me docs.google.com/document/d/13_S0PPs5iNj2Dk89vLuyf1D21PHlvZgc1E0s4WtlJnQ/
