      This is really interesting to me now. As a kid I was told we were at the end of history and American capitalist democracy will prevail for all time. But now libs and cons are resurrecting China and Russia to mime the cold war again despite everything that's changed.

          Oh other fun fact, the gulags ended in the 50s during de-Stalinization. So gulag jokes were dated in the 80s too. They were also not much different in function to American prisons (which hold political prisoners and also mandate forced labor)

            Oh and now they made a joke like "The communists didn't think women were smart enough to work" WHICH BOGGLES MY MIND The USSR made an active effort to have gender equality in the workplace long before it became a thing in the US

              Oh my God I'm gonna lose it Like, communism was one of the first social movements to recognize the social oppression of women and other minorities. A big part of the Cold War was ending segregation so the Soviets couldn't hold that against the US
